Explorations of feast, fodder, and fortunes in Singapore

The past few weeks have been hectic around the university, but they have stimulated us to get out and explore what this city has to offer in the evening and weekends.
Here is Yung in front of the iconic "Merlion", a mystical figure that has become the symbol of the city.  The merlion is at the mouth of the Singapore river where it flows into the harbor.

Near the mouth of the river is the oldest remaining bridge that links the northern and southern areas of the city.    I am a civil engineer..... The building on the left of the bridge is the original post office that has been turned into a swanky hotel; quite beautiful inside.

Yung at the entrance of China town.  Historic shophouses have been saved and restored; plenty of action on the street.  The author with a plate of Char Siew....sweet BBQ pork.  Splendid with an ice cold beer.

Muslim mosque (upper foto) in the Arab quarter and a Hindi temple (lower) on the edge of china town; Yung for scale in front.  Interesting religious dynamics in this city with sizeable portions of muslims, hindi, buddists, and christians.
We took a tour of the Tiger brewery a couple weeks back; mainly because it is located in the industrial area in the suburbs where we live.  Nothing is write home about...so now I am wondering why I am writing about it...
We took a boat out to the singapore landfill a couple weekend back.  They have been packing incinerated trash into the ocean between 2 small islands for the past 10 years or so.  Pretty interesting design and idea.  Slowly land is rising up between the 2 islands and then they will return to standard landfill packing above the ocean (non-incinerated).  Now they only offer fishing and some short hiking on the island...bet those fish taste wonderful.

For some interesting reason, Yung has a knack for shopping.  Go figure.

The touristy "La Pa Sa"....or satay street.  Alot of smoke, meat on a stick, and peddling.  Food was just ok, but the atmosphere was interesting.  We opted for the chicken wings and sugar cane juice.
National Day on August 9.  They are slowly building up to it, so having small fireworks displays in the preceding weekends.

We're off back to the US in about 10 short days.  Looking forward to a visit by Alex before we leave.  All the best back home.
